A tidy, well-maintained front garden can completely transform the appearance of a property. When shrubs become overgrown and borders lose their definition, even the most attractive gardens can begin to feel untidy and difficult to manage.
We recently completed a front garden makeover in Ferndown, helping the homeowner restore shape, structure and kerb appeal while preserving the garden’s established character and mature planting.
The Challenge
This front garden already had some fantastic features, including mature shrubs and an attractive ornamental tree that provided a natural focal point.
Over time, however, the planting had become overgrown. Borders had started to merge together, shrubs had lost their shape, and the overall layout felt enclosed and lacking definition.
Our goal was not to completely redesign the space, but to carefully restore balance and structure while retaining the mature character that made the garden special.
Before the Transformation

The existing garden contained healthy planting but required careful management to bring it back under control and improve its overall appearance.
Restoring Shape and Structure
The first stage of the project focused on reclaiming the garden’s original structure through professional pruning and maintenance.
Work carried out included:
- Careful pruning and reshaping of mature shrubs
- Reducing excessive growth to open up planted areas
- Reforming and redefining borders
- Lawn edge tidying
- Removal of unwanted growth and garden debris
- General garden maintenance throughout the front garden
By selectively reducing growth rather than removing established planting, we were able to create a much more open and welcoming appearance while preserving the garden’s maturity.
Planting and Border Refresh
Alongside the maintenance work, we also provided planning, plant sourcing and planting services to help refresh the borders.
Rather than introducing planting that would feel out of place, we selected suitable plants that complemented the existing garden and worked alongside the mature shrubs already in place.
This helped to:
- Introduce additional colour and seasonal interest
- Improve balance within the borders
- Enhance the overall appearance of the garden
- Maintain a natural and established feel
The result is a garden that feels refreshed and carefully considered while remaining in keeping with the property.
The Finished Result

Following the pruning, border restoration and new planting, the garden now feels brighter, more spacious and significantly easier to maintain.
The reshaped shrubs provide structure throughout the year, while the refreshed planting introduces colour and visual interest without overwhelming the space.
Most importantly, the garden retains its mature character while offering greatly improved kerb appeal.
